
Spartacus was Thracian gladiator in Rome and an escaped slave. He was also the leader in a slave uprising known as Third Servile War or the War Of Spartacus. He had freed an estamation of 70,000 slaves.
Here’s a time line of Spartacus and the Gladiator War:
- c 103 BC – Spartacus was Born near Strymon river.
- c 78 BC – Spartacus serves in the Roman Army as an auxiliary soldier.
- c 73 BC – Spatacus trained at Lentulus Batiatus’s ludas(Gladiator School), which was lacated near Capua. Spartacus trained as Thracian gladiator.
- c 73 BC – Spatacus, along with Crixus Castus, Gamicus, Oenomaus, and around 70 other gladiators escaped Lentulus Batiatus’s ludas(Gladiator School).
- c 73 BC – Spartacus and the rest of escaped gladiators took refuge on the side of Mount Vesusius.
- c 72 BC – Some of the gladiators steal and rob form the local area.
- c 73 BC – Several slaves start to join Spatacus and the other gladiators.
- c 73 BC – Spatacus becomes the head of a army made up of escaped slaves and gladiators.
- c 73 BC – The Third Servile War Begins
- c 73BC – Clodius Glaber with 3000 soldiers are sent to put an end to the slave rebellion.
- c 73BC – Spartacus and his slave army defeats Clodius Glaber.
- c 72BC – After defeating Clodius Glaber, the army reached an estiment 30,000 escaped slaves.
- c 72BC – The slave army decides to split based on their native languages.
- c 72BC – The Senate sends Consuls Gellius Publicola and Gnaeus Cornelius Lentulus Clodianus with two legions each to end the war.
- c 72BC – Crixus(the leader of the Gals and Germans) is killed at the Battle of Picenum and many in his ranks are defeated by Gellius Publicola.
- c 72BC – Spartacus and his army defeat Gnaeus Cornelius Lentulus Clodianus then Consuls Gellius Publicola.
- c 72BC – Spartacus and his army defeat Gaius Cassius Longinus(Governor of Cisalpine Gaul).
- c 72BC – Spartacus advices an escape traveling through the Alps but the Gauls and Germans choose to stay to rob and steal.
- c 72BC – The Senate appoints Marcus Licinius Crassus The Supreme Command of War.
- c 72BC – Spatacus and the slave army moves through southern Italy to Sicily, where he hire some pirate ships.
- c 71BC – Spartacus and his slave army defeat two of Marcus Licinius Crassus’s legions.
- c 71BC – Marcus Licinius Crassus punishes his Roman Sholdiers with Decimation.
- c 71BC – Spartacus establishes a camp in Rhegium.
- c 72BC – Spartacus’s plan to take his army to Sicily is foiled by the betrail of the Cilician pirates.
- c 71BC – Marcus Licinius Crassus and his army dig and build a sixty kilometer long and five meters wide ditch and wall at the toe of Italy spanning for sea to sea.
- c 71BC – Spartacus and his slave army managed to escape toward Brundisium through Marcus Licinius Crassus lines.
- c 71BC – It is believe the Spatacus died at the Battle at the River Silarus although his body was never found.
- c 71BC – Marcus Licinius Crassus beats most of what left of the slave army. He captured and estimate of 6,000 slaves and crucified along the Appian Way from Rome to Brundisium.
- c 71BC – An estimate of 5,000 slave fled north and excaped capture.
- c 71BC – Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus(Pompey) defeated the rest of the slave army. He took credit for ending the war and was granted a triumph.
- c 71BC – Marcus Licinius Crassus recieved an ovation.
- c 71BC – This was the end of The Third Servile War.
It is not known if Spatacus was his real name or the name given to him by the Romans. All infomation about Spartacus is has been reconstruted about twenty to thirty years later and none of it is first hand or secound hand knowledge. The only information that can be agreed apon is that he was a Thracian gladiator at vLentulus Batiatus’s ludas and that he was a skilled military leader.
